Derek and his team were inspired by the Boards for Bros model being used at Skatepark of Tampa and felt it would be an amazing opportunity to bring the gift of skateboarding to more youth in New Jersey. The Boards for Bros mission focuses on at-risk youth and engages the entire community and Derek and his team are finding it is a good fit for the skateboarding community here. Giving a young person a skateboard invites them to join to a creative, supportive community that encourages acceptance of everyone, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, gender, or sexual orientation. It also gives them an opportunity to learn how to see the world differently, to work through pain and frustration to achieve their goals, and to become confident in their ability to succeed.
